Aerial view of a Zebu Market in Diourbel, in western Senegal. Animals play a capital role in the rural world. Beyond the diversity of food products they offer, they contribute to the fertilization of the land through manure and provide traction strength for agriculture. They also serve as sources of savings on foot for a number of families. Despite symbolic recognition of the extensive farming system, the Senegalese government consider pastoral practice to be unproductive and archaic. Pastorialists, however, contribute in a crucial way to the survival of herds and the needs of meat in a country where the population is constantly increasing.
