A young boy working in the market, in Antananarivo, capital city. According to the World Bank, one of the consequences of poverty is that one in four Malagasy children aged 5 to 17 have to work in order to support their families. A low attendance rate and a high dropout rate, especially among girls are the consequences of a failing educational system and lack of infrastructure in rural regions. At the end of primary school, only 17% of students have minimum reading competencies (French).
